It has various fauna species unique to the area and cannot be seen anywhere else in the world. It is known to have the best displays of different tropical plants in Australia. Enjoy the great outdoors and explore the various tropical fauna that covers the botanical garden.

Admission is free to the Cairns Botanical Garden, but donation boxes are available to help in the upkeep of the garden. It’s a favourite destination among families or visitors who want to relax and enjoy different tropical plants and beautiful views.

The Cairns Botanical Gardens have four distinct areas: Flecker Gardens, Centenary Lakes, Mt. Tanks Art Centre, and Whitfield Conservation Park.

Flecker Gardens

Flecker Gardens is a haven for various exotic species of palms, large trees, ferns, orchids, bromeliads, and insect-eating pitcher plants. It was created in 1886 and is home to tropical flora and plants are rarely found anywhere in the world.

The garden is also surrounded by various fruit-bearing trees such as Mangosteen, Soursop, Black Sapote, and the Durian tree. Be amazed at the 70 kg Amorphophallus Titanum and its massive 7-meter leaf and one of the world’s rarest tropical flowers.

Enjoy a walk under the canopy of its massive trees that surround the garden and enjoy its cool shade. Hear the wind blow and watch their branches sway following the direction of the wind. Marvel at the beauty of its brightly coloured orchids and smell the scent of fresh flowers.

You can also hear the sound of flowing water through from its different brooks, streams, and waterways that add a relaxing ambience to the botanical garden. It’s also a favourite location for pictorials with family and friends. Take stunning pictures among the flowers, trees, and beautiful landscapes. See birds, butterflies, and other insects freely flying between the lush green landscape.

Afterwards, enjoy delicious food underneath giant canopies in the Botanical Garden Restaurant. Be one with nature while you’re enjoying a meal in the open-air venue. They serve delicious breakfast and lunch menus. Try their famous strawberry waffles and cafe menu. The Flecker Botanical Gardens is open from 7:00 am-5:30 pm, and 8:30 am – 5:30 on weekends and public holidays.

Centenary Lakes

The centenary lakes are just next to the Flecker Gardens and are an exotic wilderness parkland. It’s a nice place to have a picnic with its long boardwalk and a nice view of the lake.

The freshwater lake is home to 130 species of birds. It has a great variety of wildlife, including fish, water birds, and turtles. Just keep an eye for crocodiles, which occasionally appear on the lake.

Tanks Art Center

Tanks Art Center got its unique name since it’s housed using three converted World War 2 naval storage tanks. It’s one of the premier art and performance venues in Cairns. It has been a venue of several Musical performances, musical performances, and art exhibitions.

Whitfield Conservation Reserve

Located just behind the Flecker Gardens is a 300-hectare forested mountain. Mt. Whitfield Conservation Reserve has walking trails that are a favourite of hikers and adventure seekers. It has two routes; the Red Arrows trails have a 1-hour return journey while the Blue Arrow trail has a 5-hour return journey more suitable for more experienced hikers. Both routes give the hikers sensational views of the forest.
