Cairns Aquarium

Located in the centre of Cairns, Queensland, the Cairns Aquarium is one of the great visitor attractions. It’s Australia’s latest and most impressive aquarium. This three-level 7,800 square meter facility has Australia’s most prominent freshwater tank with 400,000 litres of water.

Cairns Aquarium is equipped with 71 tanks, including a deep-sea tank and the world’s first realistic tidal motion tanks. Visitors will experience a world-class facility and great opportunities for interaction with the different animals on display.

Cairns Aquarium has ten realistic habitats that give visitors an authentic lifelike view of how the fishes live in their natural environment. This world-class venue provides a stunning view of incredible animals and marine ecosystems that are only found in Australia’s tropical north. It’s the only aquarium in the world that exclusively features the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest.

Cairns Aquarium also features excellent marine habitat of the Gulf Savannah and Cape York regions of Australia. Have an unforgettable experience with the aquarium’s 16,000 different animals. Enjoy an educational tour of Cairns Aquarium; you can start the tour with the freshwater tanks and then slowly transition to the saltwater tanks and see similarities and differences of both distinct marine ecosystems.

It’s an excellent venue for students to learn, discover, and have fun. Through the hands-on approach of their professional educators or “AquaNuts,” they encourage student’s curiosity. They have daily talks, presentations, and animal feeding sessions. They teach students the value of conservation and how it helps creatures of the Great Barrier Reef and North Queensland Wet Tropics Rainforest.

Visitors can also enjoy the shark feeding activities, daily animal talks, and the very interactive marine touch tank. The Cairns Aquarium also has treetop displays where you can see Boyd’s Forest Dragon, Amethystine Phyton, and others going around their Wet Tropics ecosystem. Go to the freshwater and marine habitat displays and see the Grey Reef Sharks, Humphead Maori Wrasse, and the endangered Freshwater Sawfish.

Dundee’s at the Cairns Aquarium offers its guests an extraordinary dining experience. Guests get to enjoy the food while observing sharks and schools of fish swimming in it’s Under the Pier Aquatic display. It’s open from Wednesday – Saturday from 10:00 am until late in the afternoon and Sunday 10:00 – 5:00 pm. it’s closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Cairns Aquarium is within walking distance from most hotels and accommodations; it’s open Daily from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm, and the last admission is 2:00 pm.
